Salt that is not salty might as well be silt. It fails to draw out flavor; it cannot preserve freshness; it has lost its identity, its power. So too light that is bottled or hidden might as well be darkness. Instead of illuminating and cleansing, healing and energizing, its nature is denied. In the same way, when you and I do not practice justice and mercy, our humanity fades, waning to something cold and vapid. But when the love and hope within us breaks free — free from fear, from greed, from apathy, and from whatever else may choke them — then our lives shine like the North Star, a guiding light toward the joy and life we all desire.
